RCB Break 17-Year Chepauk Jinx with Dominant 50-Run Victory Over CSK in IPL 2025

Chennai, March 28, 2025 – Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scripted history by ending a 17-year winless streak at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by a resounding 50 runs in Match 8 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday. The Southern Derby showcased RCB’s dominance, propelling them to the top of the IPL 2025 points table with a second consecutive victory.

RCB, batting first after CSK won the toss and elected to bowl, posted a formidable 196/7 in 20 overs. Captain Rajat Patidar led from the front with a brisk 51 off 32 balls, supported by Phil Salt’s aggressive 32 off 16 and Virat Kohli’s steady 31 off 30. A late flourish from Tim David (22* off 8) pushed RCB past the 190-mark. CSK’s bowlers, led by Noor Ahmad (3/36), fought back, but fielding lapses, including dropped catches of Patidar, proved costly.

Chasing 197, CSK crumbled under pressure from RCB’s bowling attack. Josh Hazlewood’s fiery opening spell (3/21) dismissed Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the second over, leaving CSK reeling at 8/2. Yash Dayal (2/18) compounded the damage with a double-wicket 13th over, removing Rachin Ravindra (41 off 31) and Shivam Dube (0 off 2). MS Dhoni’s late cameo—30* off 16, including two sixes and a four in the final over—offered some cheer for the Chepauk crowd, but CSK finished at 146/8.

This triumph marked RCB’s first win at Chepauk since 2008, ending a run of 11 consecutive losses at the venue. With a net run rate of +2.266 after two games, RCB solidified their early dominance in IPL 2025. CSK, meanwhile, slipped to seventh on the table after their first defeat of the season.

The match had its share of drama—CSK’s uncharacteristic fielding errors and a silenced home crowd contrasted with RCB fans chanting their team’s name. Social media erupted with posts like, “Chepauk conquered after 17 years!” reflecting the historic nature of the result.

Hazlewood earned Player of the Match honors for his match-turning spell. “It’s special to win here after so long. We executed our plans perfectly,” he said. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad rued the dropped catches, stating, “We didn’t bat well enough, and fielding lapses cost us 20 extra runs.”

As RCB basks in this landmark victory, CSK will aim to bounce back in their next outing. The IPL 2025 season heats up tomorrow with Gujarat Titans facing Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad.

Match Highlights

  • RCB’s Power Start: Phil Salt smashed 32 off 16, including two fours in the first over, setting an aggressive tone.
  • Patidar’s Captain’s Knock: Rajat Patidar’s 51 off 32 (4×4, 3×6) anchored RCB’s innings, surviving two dropped catches.
  • Hazlewood’s Early Blows: Josh Hazlewood removed Rahul Tripathi (4) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) in the second over, derailing CSK’s chase.
  • Dayal’s Game-Changer: Yash Dayal’s double strike in the 13th over dismissed Rachin Ravindra and Shivam Dube, effectively sealing CSK’s fate.
  • Dhoni’s Late Fireworks: MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 30 off 16, with two sixes and a four in the final over, reduced the margin but couldn’t alter the result.
  • Historic Milestone: RCB’s first Chepauk win since 2008, ending a 17-year drought.
